I'm not keen on speaker break up, I tried a couple of high end webers in a Blues deluxe and went back to the original Ceramic. It's a very personal choice :)

I think you will like the G12C/S. It has a slightly rolled off high end and never sounds harsh, though it still has some chime and sparkle. I have one, and it is a beautiful sounding speaker IMO. However, it IS efficient. The SPL rating is 99.54 which is a little less efficient than the Blackhawk at 100.08, but not much. It's still a loud speaker. Much louder than my Weber 12A125A AlNiCo for example.

The only ALNICO speaker's I have are a pair of 60’s original cone JBL D120F Grey frames. Back then they were the cats arse when it came to guitar speakers. Don’t know how they compare to modern ALNICO’s but they sure sound good. I used them in a 68 Bandmaster cab in 68-70 band I was in. The cones are well broken in by now. I’ve seen lot of guys use these in their Deluxe Reverbs and they love them.

I have a bunch of alnico vintage speakers. Love them. Sound amazing. Recycled from old hammond tube driven organs. Sure I didn't pay $200. But for playing at my house they really sound great. And I love building the old fingerjointed cabs. Some of y'all may have seen them on the other forum but oh well. 20190105_180548.jpg 20190209_100244.jpg 20190227_203432.jpg 20190330_125548.jpg 20190330_125620.jpg 20190330_133130.jpg 20190331_193423.jpg 20190331_193445.jpg 20190411_143017.jpg 20190411_181140.jpg

Cut the mids a little if you can. That's probably what are giving you ear fatigue.

The grey one with the leather handle was my first build. Bought a dado blade stack. And 1x12 pine. And got it dialed in . it took a while the other big cream colored cab is a bee hive super kit. Fingerjointed. There if a garden cry that sells them already cut, you just glue them together. Cut a baffle. Any way I'll get off here so we're not thread jackin.

Yeah, they gotta be your thing - or if you are looking to recreate the tweed vibe thing.

I find the best description of Alnico speakers is 'soft, sweet, laid back, etc'. I did some rotations in my PRRI 12" and decided I liked ceramic best - but I was looking for more punch and the Fender scooped/chime thing.

I've got a version of the G12 and would agree with your description.

Agree, D120's do a lot of things really well. Just heavy, 15 lb each.

PS - almost forgot my original thought, I've noticed spikiness, graininess, harshness seem to track with speakers ranked lower, and higher ranked speakers seem to manage treble, bass, mids much better and without the staticy thing. Ranking kinda follows cost, but not precisely. The G12 would be one lower cost speaker that seems to behave like more expensive speakers for instance, and that's only one example. Its that spikey staticy thing that puts me in the mood to swap speakers.
