I'm a retired manufacturing manager from General Electric. On the side I played in a rock band and restored old British cars (Triumphs)

I'd like to do a more specific survey of if you do or do not make a living as a musician.

    I've already answered, but wanted to add a bit of inspiration from the Three Philosophers, The Beastie Boys;

'My job ain't a job, its a dam good time.'

No matter what you do for a living, throughout your day, repeat this line to yourself and watch how your outlook, attitude and general well being improves. It truly makes the unbearable, bearable.

    This was a bit brief.

I've been a gigging musician since 1975. Signed to Norman Whitfield's label in 1979.
    Made a living for sure.
But the "career" didn't really take off until I went to work in the music department at MGM/UA. There...I was able to write music for film, tv, and for video games. I worked production for soundtrack albums, ran scoring sessions and was the music editor for several movies.

    I mixed this:

    I cut this to picture:

Funny story about this. My boss handed me the Elephunk CD and said if you find something on it that works with the opening titles, then Ron Fair will let us use it cheap.

So I put the opening up in my edit bay and clicked through the CD until I landed on Let's Get Retarded. It was perfect.

So I cut it in, and played it for the director. He loved it, except for the retarded part.

So we got Ron and Will on the phone to see if we could change it. They tossed around options for around ten minutes. I got a little bored with it, because in Hollywood everyone's afraid to make a decision.

Finally I interrupted and said this:

Let's get it started...lets get it started in here.

Will says : Yeah. That's it. I can get it to you this afternoon.

    Boom. :D

I also started out in the army. But in an IDF Infantry Division.
Then I went on to study Computer Science and Musicology, and worked as an IT project manager for many, many years before switching to something I enjoyed a lot more, music (which I’ve been doing in parallel anyway).

I’m a Tool & Die maker. It’s kinda like machinist.. except different. The cool part is that I can cut my own bodies and necks on the CNC’s when they’re not in use.

I'm retired 2X's. No more child support , kids adults, no more tuition, happily divorced. Do pretty much what ever strikes me at the moment. Like to go down to the Key's twice a year or so for some fishing. Wierd, even though I've been blessed with a bit of comfort, and haven't had to work in a while, I still have dreams about being late for work.

It's nice of you to say so but I'm old school Chinese and grew up as one of four siblings in a well off family so I knew exactly what I was getting into. I have all the advantages that health, wealth and organisation can offer. Life would be far more difficult for a Western family on an average income.

We share the main house with my cousin and her family and my sister's family live on the other side of the courtyard. Altogether we are nine adults and ten children.
