I like both Alder and Ash. IMO they sound a little different. But both sound great.

Weight is the only "Stratocaster body" factor that matters to me nowadays.

I just ask for a body that is well routed and neck seats perfectly, i have no major pretensions by the moment

I prefer them beautiful and covered in Poly so that they stay that way. I couldn't care less what they're made of so long as they're relatively light weight. They're electric guitars--none of what's under the paint affects the sound thru an amp.

Other than the look I don't think it matters, & since I like black...the look don't matter either.
So I'll be the odd one & say poplar. It's easier on my shoulder

Ash for transparent finishes due to better grain appearance.

    Alder for opaque finishes.

I don't think it makes any difference with tone.

I like to see the grain. And lots of it. So ash for me.

I have no clue if my strats are alder or ash. I guess I should care more but I don’t.

MDF, if they don't weigh at least 23 pounds, they're not a real strat:confused:

I love the look of natural ash, with a transparent finish they both look good. There's to many other variables in electric guitars for me to say I can hear a difference in woods, if one exists.

    Trans or clear finish? Ash.
    Anything opaque. Don't really care.

I don't know if it's the mind deceiving the ears, but to my ears my ash body Strat & Tele are brighter and spankier than their alder counterparts. Not necessarily a plus for everyone but as someone who plays a good deal of pop with keys/tracks/BGVs/etc my ash body guitars sit in the mix better.

(Fully acknowledged, there are tons of other variables that could be in play)

My Strats are all alder, because I like solid finishes on Strats. My Teles (all Thinline) are all either ash or mahogany (2 of each), because I like natural or translucent finishes on Teles.

This. As long as it not overly heavy.
