Actually, on a violin (or any traditional acoustic stringed instrument), f-holes make an instrument louder because it allows air to move freely in and out as the top vibrates... which, in turn, allows the top to resonate better, making it louder. Without f-holes, the movement of the violin's top becomes dampened by the trapped volume of air within the body.

My point was that the 'violin-like' f holes on an electric guitar are largely for show. They do of course serve a purpose on a violin.

I gotcha... and I agree to a point, but f-holes still serve a purpose —at least on nice jazz boxes— where the movement of the top helps shape the overall tone. But because f-holes also contribute to feedback, their usefulness comes at a price.

Without F-holes you wouldn't be able to switch out the HBs for P-90s on a Dot.

Unless you used the cheat method like I did.

Thanks you for that. Having a f-hole on a jazz box makes for a more resonant sound, and pretty dang good for those standards.

Sexy looks mostly, at least on "solid bodies".

On true hollow bodies, it's a great spot to hide your Pez dispenser and your passport.

Feedback is magic, you just have to use it for good, not evil.

Watch out for fakes, some guitars have F-Holes that look more like A-Holes....
