After reading over that PRS topic over the past two day, I decided to read the wiki page for John Mayer. Says he was inspired to start playing by seeing Marty McFly in back to the future, and, oddly...I think it’s the same for me!

probably a combination of things really, but I thought Marty was the coolest, and that was my favorite movie growing up.

What was it for you guys?

My Uncle Bob played the guitar, and I idolized him as a kid, so... I play the guitar, too.

Being in Grade 8 with albums coming out by Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Beck, and not being noticed by girls as a school band trumpet player.

Playing guitar did NOT change that last bit. Once a nerd always a nerd.

He did. Taught me all the folkie, Dave Van Ronk-style stuff he knew, and then I got interested in rock forms later.

Very nice. Those are memories that won’t fade.

waiting for my son to find interest. He’ll be 13 in September. Don’t want to push him into it.

Messing about with my dads old Washburn acoustic at home. I’m an only child so had a quite a lot of free time alone at home in those wet northern winters.

got into punk at around 14 via watching skateboarding videos so progressed onto electric guitar to play that and it went from there.

thirty years later still going on both though the skating and the music is both a Bit mellower these days

When I was 13, I first started to listen to music outside of the radio and got hooked on Toto. I knew that I wanted to play then, and the more I listened to music, the more I wanted to play. Then, after hearing their music passively in my dads car for years, I got into the Beatles and all the other good stuff from the 60d and 70s and that’s basically it! My taste in music has evolved quite a bit since then and I’ve learned a lot about music, but I’ve never gotten tired of Totos classics and can listen to the Beatles all day long too. So to me, it’s gotta be Toto/ The Beatles :)

The cool kid at Summer camp air guitared to Crazy Train with a tennis racquet during the talent show.

    I was blown away.

I think the fact that I had no real inspiration is at the heart of why I still can’t play nearly 20 years later. I was heavy into bicycles but tore my knees up in 2001 doing a charity ride. At the same time I bought my son a Squier Strat Pack for Christmas and got hooked by all the shinies at GC. Sold all my bike gear and tools and started buying guitars. That was the beginning of the end.

My son is skating now, so maybe there’s hope. But the videos he watching are mostly from the 90’s, so most of what he listens to at the moment are the 90’s hip hop songs I grew up on.
