Yeah, if you grew up playing in the 1980s reading the guitar magazines when that word first gained traction; it's EVH specific and all those who followed in his wake trying to outdo each other in the speed and dexterity department. George Lynch, Vivian Campbell, Jake E Lee etc etc etc.

I guess I have always thought it referred to a player with stunning technical facility, speed in particular. There is I think a connotation(or jealous dig) that such players just play a lot of empty notes to impress. The problem is that there are certainly players with remarkable technical skills who also have great taste and drive. I think of Satriani, who if you listen to pieces not intended as mere showpieces, pieces in which he is part of an ensemble, has sublety and taste as well, in abundance. His cover of "Cortez the Killer" with Grace Potter (remarkably good too) is a case in point.

    There, that's my serious answer.

I wasn't aware of a Jazz category of shredding. I learn something new on this site every day.

I guess McLaughlin is kind of a shredder. He sure plays a lot of pointless notes. But he does have nice hair, so maybe it's a Hair Band move.
