What is the BEST pickup position on a SSS Strat?

Discussion in 'Stratocaster Discussion Forum' started by EyeLikeTortoise, Sep 14, 2021.

If you could only use one pickup on your SSS Strat for the rest of your life which would you chose?

Blenders are relatively uncommon. Is too bad that is the case. Far better than two tone controls.

Not so with the five way. They took off starting in the mid 70s. Quack tones are classic. Some players found the sweet spot quack tone with the traditional three way long before the five ways made their debut.

I play in the middle position quite a bit, excellent for rhythm and lead work.

Bridge. The others are too reserved for me. I get aggressive at times and the other two just don't cut it for that.

Id have to say middle given you narrowed it down on us .

    Im a fan of positions 2 & 4 on a Strat anyway ;)

I picked up a CV 50s Strat a while back and its mid pup is sweet. Mid + bridge =:eek::eek:

Those positions set the course of my playing life to strats. Dire Straits 'Down to the Waterline' (bridge and middle) and 'In the Gallery' (neck and middle) were epiphonies to me.

    Why a 7+9 or -9, of course.

I do mostly neck/mid, followed by neck only.

I've never warmed up to mid-only.

Straight into an amp? The the bridge position is where I usually am, but I have a real flavor for I think it's position 2, the middle and bridge pickup together, has a snappy tone reminds me of nylon strings kind of.

Neck and bridge together sound great. It should be possible on every Strat. If it isn't.

One of these, on me single coils.... depending. Sprinkle in a bit of delay some reverb, a hint of ye olde 60hz hum and a bit of the old whammy here, there and once again.
And there you have it - Strat Tone.

This morning it's been a bit of the Neck and Middle, then the Middle and Bridge, then the Middle. Being nice and gently mellow for the sake of my neighbors before the sunrise.

In order of most used to least used:

    Middle
    Neck
    Bridge
    Bridge/middle
    Neck/middle

I rarely use the #2 and #4 positions, I find the tone too scooped and lacking bite / attack…

At the front of the body of the guitar, but underneath the strings. And not just for Strats. All my guitars are like that. :thumb:

Do you tune down to D Standard tuning for CCR?

I play mostly Neck & Middle separately depending on the songs. Not a fan of the between positions.

I'll crank the mid boost and play bridge if I want Les Paul kinda rhythm or that 80s Journey kinda sound

I can do all 3 on my Hardtail not a fan though.
Neck & Bridge is nice when clean for rhythm.
Can do Middle& Bridge parallel & in series for a more humbucker sound too but still find myself playing neck or middle exclusively
