    I love sad music.

I love songs that make me feel desperation.

Yes, I like music that makes me feel negative feelings. I know some people can't even fathom wanting that feeling from music, but I love it. I find a lot of beauty in these kinds of songs. They make me feel very powerful emotions that most music doesn't even try to communicate most of the time. I like music that makes me happy as well but music that is this sad connects with me in a way nothing else does when things aren't going right in my life.

For me, the undisputed kings of sad music are Radiohead. They were the band that got me into liking this kind of music and most of my favorite sad songs are from them. But I would like to hear more.

So, with that being said, what are some of the saddest songs you know?

To give you an idea, here's a prime example of what I'm talking about:

How to Disappear Completely. This song just oozes alienation. "I'm not here, this isn't happening". Denial, desperation, numbness. This is a very powerful song in my opinion. This is the feeling I'm going for.

sort of a cliche at this point but this one's a contender among many ( and my tastes in sad go far and wide... Bang Bang is also on the list....)

For No One by the Beatles.

Key of C, which traditionally lends itself to innocence, purity, and naivety. But the lyrics are about losing the woman you love. The conflict this creates, along with the descending chord changes, a very melancholy song to me.

And just on a pure visceral level Hurt by Johnny Cash guts me every time.

And watch this Chris Cornell cover of John Lennon’s greatest song, “A Day in the Life”, while the Beatles certainly have the best version of the song, Cornell’s is haunting and sad.

And of course, sometimes life adds a layer of perspective to art that breaks the heart. John Lennon’s Beautiful Boy is, as a father, really hard to listen too knowing what evil monster was not on the run, but was waiting to take that beautiful boy’s father away forever.

One that always gets me is Sugaree by the Grateful Dead.

    Beautiful, yet lyrics are heartbreaking.

    Poignant.
