My Grandfather was in a band called “3 and a Tub”. The tub referenced the percussionist using a steel pan drum.

People were always dancing and having a good time. Definitely made me want to learn how to play.

Yeah, I was in front of the TV when The Beatles were on Ed Sullivan.

But it was seeing The Monkees every week that really cemented it.
To the point where I quit piano lessons and wanted to play drums like Micky.
That never happened, it was a few years later that I was able to scrape together enough to get a beat up guitar.

I wanted to be a soldier like my grandfathers were.
I got screwed by being born with aortic stenosis, so im just playin the hand i was dealt.
I think this is why i have a love/hate thing with music.

The sound of music. A favourite who could play You Are My Sunshine. Mom and sisters who loved music. Bedtime on hot nights as a kid, putting on old country LPs, while the house cooled down. Just brushing my fingers across a cousin's acoustic guitar. The Beatles, surf music, Chet Atkins. Being poor and wishing so much for a guitar, finally buying one with my first paycheck at age 18, 46 years ago. Thanks God!

Just was, always. I “chose” playing music the same way I “chose” to be attracted to women: which is to say, I was born this way.

A sheer love of music that borders on the insane... Like the other day at work: I got it into my head that I just had to hear Stan Getz's glorious "Her"... (And we talk about tone! John Coltrane on Stan's the "Sound": "Lets face it- we'd all sound like that if we could." )

I honestly could spend, and have, all day listening to Beethoven, Miles, Getz, Richard Strauss, Duke Ellington, the divine Sarah Vaughan, Mahler, Mozart, and of late Rachmaninoff...

I weep for people who have no feelings for music. What a sad life they must lead...

I caught it from my grandmother and mother. My grandmother played piano in a silent movie theater. Man when she played good ragtime stuff on the keys it blew my mind.

I hope you all realise, that in the real world of music.. guitarists aren't considered musicians. More like oik's.. bottom feeders.. Sorry guys, you'll have to bump up the old ego some other way.. ;):D

Some of us played other instruments than the guitar. I played the sax.
The reason i switched to the guitar was because you didnt get many girls playing the sax in a marching band.
As soon as i played the guitar in my first band, i had my pick of tons of girls.
It is my opinion that anyone(male) who didnt start playing guitar for that exact reason is full of crapola.

I am a hard rock guy and have been all my life but I was also the biggest "Dukes of Hazzard" fan you could have ever met when I was a kid so this made me want to play the guitar more than anything else.

When I was a kid I I watched The show "Les Paul & Mary Ford At Home" boy could they play. I would listen to the Kingston Trio on my parents Hi-Fi Stereo and always watched The Lawerence Welk Show Tele & Strat guitar players In the orchestra. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, the younger son Ricky Nelson had a big influence. The Ed Sullivan Show The Beatles and Beach Boys did me in, I had to play guitar after all this torture, it was meant to be.

After having to quit playing hockey I needed a new hobby. Why not the guitar?

Seriously. And I’m darn glad I made the choice.

I hope you realize that some of us here are in fact musicians who happen to play the guitar. I've worked with symphony and jazz players, and nobody ever looked down on my chosen instrument.
