I've gotten a collection of guitars (Ten?) and some don't get played as often as others. What brand of strings are others using for long life on rarely played guitars?
I've heard coated strings last much longer but are they worth it?

Elixir. They cost double, but they seem to last double, too.

Dont go Elixir if You dont like plastic feeling strings. Daddario recently have brought new micro coated strings. They are XT strings. I higlhly recommend NYXL by Daddario, they arent coated but have this carbon core something that last very long

Ernie ball paradigm are cool too from what people say

I get long life from Gibson Vintage Reissues. Cost a bit more than Ernie Balls but last a heck of a lot longer. Plus they sounds really good.

Elixir Optiwebs are their newer natural feel strings. Go on all guitars I build.

I use DR blues on my strat, I get that nice straty sound for a long LOOONG time which is good because I would rather go to the dentist than change strings. There ok on my les paul but not my favorite sound on it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I might get some elixirs to start with and see how they last compared to Earnies.

How long they last depends on several factors including your body chemistry and your sound preference.

Ernie Ball strings don't last long for me. Maybe my sweat eats the tin plating on the trebles, they break right away.

I hate new string zing. For me, pure nickel wraps seem to lose the zing very quickly (within hours) and then stay consistent for a year or more. So that is my preference. But I know that others love that zing, and change strings as soon as it's gone.

I get bulk EB’s because I’m cheap. I really do like D’Addario though. I started out with them and used them for years. Good strings.

When I was in my 20’s I had sweaty hands and I could dissolve a set of strings in a matter of minutes it seemed like. Nowadays I can keep a set of strings on forever it seems like. I change them when they won’t tune worth a crap.

    DR strings. No coating required.

This thread can be ended now.
Yes, they are that good. :)

In my experience, unless your hands don't sweat at all, ever, Ernie Balls work best in the garbage can.

The two or three times D'Addarios ended up on my strat was many years ago when I had a vintage trem block... the high E and B strings both broke (in the trem block) two or three days from bending (with Graphtech graphite saddles!). This was probably between 2004 and 2008, so they could have improved.

    DRs are amazing.
If you don't know that, it's because you haven't tried them yet. :)

They should last a long time if you put them in a case. ;)
