I remember D Allen pickups used to get raved about on here...but no longer (or at least, not recently, based on a search). Any reason for that?

I still hear ppl talk about his Texas flood and echoes sets. His voodoo 69s and john Mayer pickups. I have no clue why people want strat pickups with no mids. But hey if they want to not be head that's on them lol

I choose pickups based on the "story" of the guitar I'm building. One might get a cheapo ebay thing, another might get a boutique handwound set, a different one might have been mass produced in decades past.

No preference for any one source, just whatever suits my needs.

    +1 for Bootstrap.

Not sure that most folks would think of them as boutique, however, considering how inexpensive they are.

I grow my own. For under $50 in parts, you can make your own winder.

They are handmade in Ohio. They cut their own flatwork for the bobbins. You can select many different options when buying. If what you want is not there you can contact and talk.

What you say can be true because some people might feel uncomfortable paying US 50 or less for a set of pickups. :)

Rocketfire make great pickups. Are Bareknuckle going as strong as ever? Haven't noticed as much talk of them recently. I have their Sultans set and it's great.

Yeah, that is what I was getting at, to me they offer what boutique winders do but at an approachable price point. I think they are amazing and I really don’t get how they do it.
