The solo on Zeppelins no quarter(song remains the same version). Like angels are flying out of Jimmy's guitar.

Pretty sure it's a Les Paul. The entire first album was a Tele, but he started using a Les Paul on the second album (on most of the tracks from what I have read), and I'm pretty sure Whole lotta love was one of the LP tracks.

Yes, there's something about Leslie West putting-it-out, that's for sure ! Cool post ! And Felix Pappalardi ( bass ) has got to be "the" hippest dude on the planet for his time lol ! ( Felix produced Creams albums BTW ).

    Cool post,

What's the signature clean tone for an LP and what amp is typically used? For strat clean tones, we have the Twin Reverb or something similar, what brings out the signature LP tone on a clean setting?

I've been reworking my tone a bit to be more purposeful and I always like starting with a clean tone that lets the guitar's natural tone come through.

I don't know if you were addressing the question to Fezz, but...mainly, the same things as a Strat. Back off the volume and the preamp. For me good clean...is rooted in a Super Reverb.

    way out there
My favorite Les Paul tone is the sound Hubert Sumlin got on Howlin Wolf's early/mid 60s recordings.
Goldtop with P-90s through a Silvertone 1485 with six speakers, then a Twin Reverb later on. Both pickups (wired out of phase) on.

He's off-camera here but you can make out the headstock about two minutes into the video on the bottom right of the screen...

...and about 2:20 into this one:

Here he is backing Sunnyland Slim:

He used Les Pauls with humbuckers later on but sounded pretty close to the way he did earlier on. When I saw him on one occasion he was playing a ESP Strat copy and sounded almost exactly the same. The next time I saw him he was playing a borrowed Telecaster and yes, still sounded like himself.

I don't think he uses a Les Paul very often anymore, but Junior Watson has terrific tone no matter what gear he uses. (It's actually a Tokai with a Gibson headstock overlay added to it after a headstock repair)

A good amp, and a good player. :D

For the fun of it, what amp do you think I'm using in clip I posted?

Mick Ronson's tone made me a Les Paul convert. I prefer the studio recordings.

Trick question? You've been known to record straight into computers through simulators and such, I think. o_O
