If three and four were seven only
Where would that leave one and two?
If love can be and still be lonely
Where does that leave me and you?
Time there was and time there will be
Where does that leave me and you?

The genius of Townes van Zandt, so simple yet so powerful.

All the bald guys, are wearing hats
When your hair falls out, it's down to that
It keeps the rain off, but when I get home
Take it off like Kublia Khan I gotta stately Pleasure Dome

Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
    Rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

    or

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way.
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

I sense a runner in the garden
Although my judgements known to fail
Once built a steamboat in a meadow
Cos I'd forgotten how to sail

So now we're dancing through the garden
And what a garden I have made
And now that death will grow my jasmine
I find it soothing I'm afraid

Spectacularly good. But my favorite verse in the song comes a little later:

Everybody knows you love me, baby
    Everybody knows that is true
Everybody knows that you’ve been faithful
Give or take a night or two.
    Everybody knows you’ve been discrete
But there were so many people you had to meet
    Without your clothes
    And everybody knows.

Leonard Cohen was an absolute treasure.

"Mr. Market said you know I cut it fine
The pendulum must swing both to and fro
I have to hit the bottom line or my bonus waves bye bye
This hurts me to my soul I hope you know
So he took a euphemism in the one hand
Choked a flimsy rationale with the other
And he bravely took a stand atop a castle made of sand
Took a look around and laid off his own mother"

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

    Jerome J. Garcia / Robert C. Hunter

I'll have to exclude all work by Pink Floyd and The Beatles or I'll be here all day.

Hello me, meet the real me
And my misfit's way of life
A dark black past is my
    Most valued possession
    Hindsight is always 20-20
But looking back it's still a bit fuzzy
    Speak of mutually assured destruction?
Nice story, tell it to Reader's Digest!

    You can't go on
    Thinking nothing's wrong, oh no
    Who's gonna drive you home
