.

Once upon a time ... people bought a little trailer to hook behind the sedan to tow that wide screen television set home from the 'stuff mart'... or the bricks for the patio.

Yeah man.

Best thing to do is catch them at the model year end clearance. Pretty good discounts. I work at a mazda, Honda, Ford. Some of the Ford trucks will have 15k discounts if you qualify. I don't do sales though just service so I have no idea how all that works.

I originally wanted a used Silverado/Sierra, but I've discovered that the Suburban is thousands less, has the same power plant, and rides/tows better because of the longer wheel base. It was an easy choice to make, so now I'm hunting one of those, but finding one with less than 200k is impossible. The hunt continues...

Suburban 2500 gas is the same engine in my 2500 avalanche. Same vehicle really except mine also has a bed instead of cargo area. 8.1 litres of gasoline power.

This past spring I had about 2 ton of brick in the back and the truck wasn't even squatting.

When did trucks get so damned expensive?

When they stopped being trucks, and moved into the realm of luxury people movers.

Much like those 4 wheel drive SUV's that are never used off road. Front wheel drive 4 and 6 cylinder Jeeps with 8 speed automatic transmissions.

Its not just trucks, its cars, SUV, vans, etc.
Theres a reason for it, but it gets into Politics and brainstorms from Washington, which I believe is against forum rules to discuss.

But yea, theres a reason for the insane used vehicle pricing.

Aside from the politics...there is a market driven part to it. A current spec F350 (or 3500 Ram or chevy) has nearly the same capacities that a F550 had a few years ago. Everything is beefier. which to me is great, but the other side of that beef is scary...beer swillin knuckle draggers hauling their 5th wheels out to Glamis at the speed of fright in a SRW when clearly a DRW is called for...with no special testing or licensing required.

its got nothing to do with politics. Its supply, demand, the price of new vehicles, and the area you live in. trucks are hot all over the USA...very high demand

I had to have a chuckle at that. If you were in UK you'd be saving up to buy a tank of fuel.. not buying a new truck.. ;)

I've seen those pickup style trucks here but they are not in any way practical. Having an unsecured load area will have you robbed at the first traffic lights.

Have to get one of these, retro-fit extra security and put a sign on the back telling people there is nothing valuable inside:

We have been needing a new rig for a while now (years). So looking at trucks has about Givin me a chronic wallet ache and bank account depletion syndrome. 45 k for used trucks holy moly.

The funny part, is seeing these "trucks" never seeing any use as a truck besides carry home a bag of grocery's.

Your new insight of the costs involved with trucks, left me with driving a 20 year old F150, that I dropped a whopping $250 on it two years ago, and still going...

About 3 years ago I found a used Ram 2500 with the Hemi and only 19K miles to tow my camper. Got it for 28K. I thought it was a steal! 2 weeks ago I started looking for a new 2500...pfft!!! Ain't no way!!!! They are 50K+ brand new!!!

Also, never sign up for this thing called True Car...it gives you average prices that vehicles sell for...I signed up and within 1 minute....1 MINUTE!!! I started getting phone calls from dealers!!! I probably got around 15 phone calls and emails and they were persistent! Finally had to tell them to stop calling me!

The problem with trucks is that the expectations of truck buyers with regard to performance. They cost a lot now, because they are expected to be able to tow huge loads........while driving 85mph. Back in the day, you had to go slower when you were towing.

Yup. The biggest truck engine Chevy offered in the 1960s was 5.3 L. That was the heavy-duty engine. You had a lot more options back then, so there was a wide range of horsepower, much of which overlapped with today's Silverado. But, to get that power of today's Silverados, you had to buy the biggest damned engine they made.
