Of course everyday is a new day to learn more and you're never good enough. When and what were you doing when you said to yourself "wow, I know how to play guitar?"

I watched this video and was surprised to find out that I was an intermediate guitar player.

The first time I felt I was making some progress was many years ago as a teen when my mother said something to the effect of "that sounded pretty good". Usually it was "turn that @#$@#$ down". It was the first indication that whatever noise what coming from my bedroom was sounding somewhat musical...even if it wasn't to her musical taste.

I believe it's when everyone else thinks you suck, but you know in your heart you don't, then one day they say "wow, I didn't know you could play so well"...

Early 1971, I was a sophomore in high school.

New Orleans's Metairie suburb at a local church hall

It was on my first semi-amateur gig with a group made up of members of our high school band, and the music was actually happening.

I realized, wow, I can play music.

BTW, it was a bass gig.

I was playing one of these at the time:

I wouldn't pay too much attention to this guy, to be honest. He's in the business of trying to sell lessons.

If you only have 3 categories of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, I believe the vast majority of players are somewhere on the Intermediate spectrum...even that YouTuber (who likely thinks he's advanced). I reserve the Advanced category for much higher caliber players. If I ever start to think I'm "advanced" then what exactly is Guthrie Govan or Tommy Emmanuel?

According to the posted video, I'm like an advanced intermediate. But I know so many good players that I feel more like an advanced beginner at best.

I don't know, what he said seemed reasonable...but more of what I call upper beginner level.

Then by that standard I'm an "intermediate" player!

I don't know diddly about music theory, scales...nu'in.

    I know, I'm not a master picker, I don't think I'm a hack.

Is any of this even something that should be measured or sought out?

One thing I have mastered is...having fun. For a hobby, or beloved pursuit, not much is better than applause...who needs recreational drugs when you can get applause? Sitting around in a garage as a kid sweatin your ass off, or playing for 5 or 6 thousand people...playing is a hoot! When you think about how many want to play and that WE can! If you've just got down Tom Dooley or nailed something from Satch, how blessed are we?
