Who can guess what I had to do yesterday?

I so miss it.
There isn't anything quite like it...
Endorphins ... nature's wonder drug.

I abused my knees. I'd always blamed the skiing. The revisionist corrected my misconception. He said that the bone doesn't support that. He said he'd bet me that he could guess the kind of runner I was.

Then he looked at me and simply said:
"a dumb one...you ran on asphalt and you didn't walk down hills..."
He was spot on. I pounded my knees to dust running down hills as hard as I ran up them.

I sure as hell don't miss smoking though.

^This, My old neighbor, a wonderful elderly lady had to go in for hip surgery, after they were done the leg on the side where they did the surgery was 2 inches shorter than the other.

Turns out having one leg 2 inches shorter is kind of a big deal. So more surgery, then something happened but no one knows what... because it happened when she was alone, But her hip and now knee were broken and had to be replaced. I personally think the glue wasn't dry on the second hip, but I'm no doctor.

Throughout all of this I walked her dog every morning, I know a lot of people see that as a chore but I loved that dog (dont have one of my own) so... obligatory dog photo.

So it pays to research, I have empathy for you, the entire time I took care of my father his knee replacement drove him nuts with pain, he was a Depression Era kid, he rarely complained, but he griped about his knee.
Beautiful Pup...
I wanted to bring my original knee home for my dog.
They said no.
Of course they said the same thing when I asked to bring my colon home in a doggy bag. Something to keep in the fridge to freak people out I said ...call home grown Polska Kielbasa I told em.
They said "no."
Then made me talk to a shrink.
Shrink and I were laughing so hard I started to leak at the incision...
So the nursing staff threw his ass out.

I asked for my OEM knee too. They said no! When they took the hardware from the first surgery out, I got to keep it. On the 4th surgery, they took the hardware from the second surgery out and said no, it's against the law. Yeah, they lied and I was rather perturbed but it's not like it's the end of the world. I also have the first knee they put in me on surgery #7 and took out on surgery #8. When this is done, doc already promised me that I'll get another souvenir.

My Buddy had been drinking so it was all his fault IMO. Drink, ride too fast for the exit and hit the sign.
My situation was due to a guy that didn't want to stop at a sobriety checkpoint and had been smoking it up. I was at work and doing a specific job...happened to be the first guy that didn't have time to get out of the way.

Yea I remember you telling me about it before. I hit a car a couple of times. And hit by 1 but it didn't hurt me thankfully. 1st time I hit one, I was like 6, on Christmas Day. I couldn't stop and slammed into my aunts rear bumper on an 80s car.

So I got a face full of nice shiny chrome bumper. It split my forehead over one eye and busted the training wheel off of one side of my bike. So when I got up to the house barely able to see from the blood running down my face, I let go of the bike to let it stand up like it always did and it just kept falling over. I finally realized it was missing a wheel and left it.

So I finally make it inside with my face covered in blood and actively bleeding and the family flipped out. Had to go to the ER where my grandparents lived and get it stitched up. I specifically remember the doctor showing me the "monkey blood" they were going to use on me lol. Tells you how long ago that was. Like 1986 or 87. And I still remember it like it was yesterday.

About 7 or 8 yrs later, I hit another car lol. We just moved into a new house and I was riding my bike up the street, looking at the other kids playing in one yard. As I passed, I turned and watched them so I was eveually looking behind me and I didn't see the car parked on the side of the road in front of me.

Yea, I smashed it good lol. Straight into the grille and hood. Boy was I embarrassed. All these new kids and I just humiliated myself big time.

I can't say that I ever hit a car...well, not while on my bike anyway. In a pickup? now that's a different situation all together.
I have been hit by a car three times though. The first was the summer of 1986 and I had just turned twelve. It was on Independence Day and I was riding my bike home from my grandmother's house. I decided to take a longer way home just because and was hit by a drunk driver in a silver '83 Monte Carlo. Knocked me off the bike and I put my hand out to protect my head from the curb and I broke my arm. I didn't know my arm was broken yet, so I picked up my mangled bicycle and carried it with a broken arm for about 1/4 mile to my uncle's house. When I found that he wasn't home I started going to his neighbor's houses and found that none of them were there either. Then a sheriff's deputy stopped to see if I was alright and all was good after that. He called my parents and an ambulance, and I got a chauffeured ride to the hospital. No fireworks for me that year...as well as no more baseball.
The second time was in 2005 and I had already moved to KC and was accompanying a friend of mine to the bar because he had a history of bad drinking decisions. I was sitting at the bar drinking my Pepsi when I looked over and he was gone. Fearing the worst, I ran out the front door and across the street. You guessed it! Hit by a taxicab. It was a late model (at the time) Crown Victoria and I rolled up the hood and slid off the windshield. I didn't get so much as a bruise out of it believe it or not. but something must break in an incident like that so I had apparently broken the mirror off the driver's door when I fell off the car. Didn't know all of what when down because I was so worried about catching up with my buddy that I ran off until I was chased down by the Westport police. I ended up agreeing to fix the mirror because I honestly didn't know, and still don't remember, if I checked to see if I had the right of way or he did. either way, in the end we were both whole and no harm, no foul.
Then there was June 11, 2011 @0218. I still drive that street on my way home every year on that day as it helps me not just remember but continue to put it to rest. I was hit at 7621 Troost in KC. That area used to be known, not so long ago, as the "Rape and Murder" district. The first officer to find me found me laying in the outside lane of the opposite direction of traffic (thankfully) just on the north side of 84th St. Now, going on 12 years later, I have learned many things. God is good, I am truly blessed (even if that means a little suffering is involved) and the rubber has dry rotted; meaning I no longer bounce.

Sorry you're having to face yet another knee surgery. But at least they're giving you bigger hardware (bigger is better :sneaky:) and also telling you that you still have bone to work with in the future!

As many say, life is good! We are all blessed... even those who somehow never notice. :)

I tried a new eye doctor to get cheaper glasses back in August. After several tests of my peripheral vision, he told me in October I had a brain tumor. Had my MRI yesterday at Kaiser with the IV dye. No brain tumor. Might need a new eye doctor.

Did they use the long or short spike on you?
Here is a series that shows the history from the day after the incident until now.
The day after the incident my knee looked like this.

This was a 3-D reconstruction of the fracture.

The first bit of hardware...Tibial plate and 10 screws.

Then the first replacement.

Now what it looks like. The pic on the left is from the day after the surgery and the one on the right is 8 weeks later after the femur healed since it cracked during the surgery.

Wow!

My mom had surgery a few days ago. They removed an aneurysm in her upper thigh/hip area. I think that's where it was, anyway. To say I was nervous is an understatement. We had "the talk" beforehand about what happens if "that" happens, which is something she's never done before. So it had me a little worried.

It doesn't help that one of my biggest fears is not waking up from surgery.

After being through 15 surgeries total throughout my life so far, I can say two things from just a (feel sarcasm here) LLLIIIITTTTLLLLEEEE bit of experience.
1. They know how to wake you up pretty well.
That said, I know about true fears. It may sound funny after hearing my story but to this day, I am still scared to death of hypodermic needles. I always tell the phlebotomists that they only get one chance to be perfect. If they miss, they don't get to try again. If they miss and dig for it, they get a rather stern face palm...and not from themselves. There is a reason for it too.

2. Every time, it has been the absolute best sleep of my life!!!!! There is a reason Robin Williams used to call Propofol Milk of Amnesia.
