Why can't I like 8-Hole Single Ply Pickguards?

I don't know why I don't like them. Maybe deep down I think they look like a $99 bullet even when it's on a really nice Reissue/EJ/EC/LB/CS. I guess it's some kind of weird mental block.

I bought a Lincoln Brewster Signature Strat and love love love it. Then the gearhead in me starts asking questions like... Hey it's got a 2 point tremolo, 9V battery and a compound radius neck so why not go ahead and put a mint 11-hole pickguard on it? Then the rational part of me takes over and leaves it alone. I love this guitar and its setup so much I haven't even taken the neck off to get a real date on it for fear I'd mess up the mojo which is usually the first thing I do.

    Real first world problems...

I’m better off with this thought: If nobody watching from the crowd will notice the difference, I probably should just let it go.

Most squiers nowadays have 3 ply pickguards.

For me it’s with Modern Tuners.

I cannot stand how blocky and cheap they look compared to the elegant vintage type, or even the gaudy F tuners…

Everyone has different tastes or a sense of style. It’s part of life. Imagine everyone looked identical, would be pretty weird.

I’m the opposite. I see that Lincoln Brewster Strat from a distance and I think wow a 50’s Strat. Get up close, 2 point trem, active electronics and modern neck shape and heel, no thanks.

That’s my opinion but to each their own. People just like different things.

Oh, I admit it's my own odd taste. I have placed various pickguards on top and everyone I've asked said to leave it alone. At this point I've just left it as is and will probably do so long term.

I have honestly never given this any thought. o_O

I just counted the screws attaching the scratch plate on my Strats and both have 11. My Tele has 8. Is that good or bad? o_O

I generally think of the pickguard as the bit that holds the electronics together. It would have to be pretty hideous for me to go to the trouble of changing it.

The first thing you usually do is mess up the mojo? Go figure.

To my eye, the outline on a 3-ply pickguard interferes with the aesthetics of the guitar, for some color combinations more than others. I also prefer fewer screws, so I suppose I have opposite sensibilities here.

to me, this looks right with a swapped loaded pickguard, though I don’t dislike the original below.

I have never, ever thought about the number of holes in a pick guard.

I don’t like single ply either. I also cannot stand the plastic insert in the truss rod hole on players series strats, just leave it empty or put some kind of wood in there!

It doesn't matter to me how many holes as long as it's not mint green!

I’m a fan. The simpler the better. 5 hole single ply on a tele too.

I never liked mint green, either. Then out of nowhere, I busted out with "all it needs is a mint green pickguard, now" the other day and had to ask myself "did I just say mint green pickguard?!" :whistling: :p
