Why is playing guitar such a positive thing. For me it's stress relief?

I think, right now, I got a lot of worries and life is coming at me thick and fast. It's more than I can get my head around and it's taking all my cognitive capacity just to get my thought in order. So......

When I get a little time to play, I am not thinking very far ahead. Maybe the next verse, maybe just the next bar.

It gives that part of my brain that needs to do all the big brain stuff a little time off. It is my levity at the moment and I am greatful to have it.

How does guitar specifically help you? Stress, self esteem, what makes you keep going?

Playing music is definitely a pleasant escape from reality. I used to get that feeling when playing golf too. I guess any activity that makes you concentrate on something that's not life's problems can have that effect.

Stress, depression, and short-term memory. No joke, when I started playing guitar when I was in uni, my ability to retain information for exams improved.

In general it's my only effective stress relief.

For me it's not playing home though, it's jamming with the guys. Getting to crank it and then just being with like minded people and the jokes/chatting between songs.

Practices often get cancelled due to life but I look forward to it constantly.

I shouldn't say not at home but less so.

Yes it is a break from the day to day for me, especially when I'm 'in the zone'.

When I play I don't think about anything else, so for me it's the best way to forget about the rest of the world going to hell in a handbasket.

For me, playing guitar is meditative. It rewires my brain, in a good way.

It's my passion to play well. Always has been. Ever since I was a kid and got mesmerized by a local hot guitarist.
I'm retired now and can devote whatever time I like to improving. It's a never ending quest.
The only stress it cures is when I finally nail something I've been practicing.

And so it begins, an 'escape from reality'. Then it becomes a parallel universe. Then you realize it's the thing that matters, the rest is constructed nonsense and doesn't really matter.

Pure escapism, nothing more. If I can indulge my inner Blackmore, Gilmour, Frusciante or whoever for 30 mins of a day i'm happy.

My hands are old and my ears are old. There are many things for which I lack the necessary dexterity. However, I play everyday. It is one of the best things I do. It is good for my heart.

It connects me to my inner self. It connects me to my mother. It connects me to moments in my life. I would not be complete if these connections were lost.

It interrupts my train of thought. If that thought is circular thought, it needs an interruption.

On days driving back from a pistol range with friends I’d often remark, “Now, what was it that was bothering me this morning? I can’t remember!…”

Leo Fender once said that all artists were angels, and it was his, “job to give them wings to fly.”

Me too, a stress reliever for sure. Only thinking about my tone, attempting to play guitar, and to sound good.
