After a lockdown here in Melbourne lasting from July to now, the state premier has lifted most of the lockown rules - can go to the pub, restaurants, shops, etc - and on 8th nov can travel where we like .

Dan said - "the state that has shown the courage, the compassion, and the character to get this job done."

Yes we bloody did. We stuck this out together. Those who sought to undermine this, or politicise it for their own attention seeking needs, should refer to Arkell vs Pressdram.

We went from 725 cases a day to ZERO today. It's been hard -nobody has been through this before.
    Well done Melbs.

it's astonishing how much of a relief it is. Three months ago my dad was diagnosed with liver cancer, and initial diagnosis was not good at all - and i couldn't even get on a plane to go to the UK to see him. Then a week or 2 back, some more tests came in, and they said it was treatable, and it was much better than feared. When i heard that, it felt like a weight had lifted from me. and now, today, i have the same feeling . And despite working from home, and it being a monday, i've just cracked a beer at 4pm.

I don't want to sound unduly pessimistic but it seems that once lockdown ends and people start going about their business up goes the R number again. :(

It happened here and lockdowns are starting again in select areas.

A vaccine will be the only game changer IMO.

I'd love to go out. Love to visit a pub or watch spouse enjoy sushi prepared by a master. I would dearly love to see my kids...for real, not in hangouts, But...

What was that line from Star Wars about getting cocky?

This thing ain't done with us. Not by a long shot.

Have good friends in Melbourne, well, just outside, Yarra. We've been in touch throughout and, unlike here, seems like everyone has played by the rules. We visited a couple of years back and loved the place and people. Congratulations, you all deserve your hard earned freedom.

A very sweet and well-meaning young lady once told me that my life would be much easier in Australia.
Her reasoning was, EVERYBODY is weird there, so I would be accepted and not stand out so much.

I don't mean to be a 'Debbie Downer' – Jesus, I can't believe I just said that!!! :) ! ...but we were free at last too, full lockdown lifted – numbers down to single digits, then boom! Numbers started rising, people stopped caring – and now cases are higher than the first wave – we've just started another 6 week, level 5 – full lockdown! So... enjoy it while it lasts friend! But enjoy it very safely, because – it'll never be too far away. Just my opinion – I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

True, hillbilly heaven is wonderful. It's the rest of the country that worries me.

I remain in a metro area of about 8 million people. Leaving the house is not something I really like to do even under ordinary circumstances.

We're a pragmatic lot here - and now we've got the numbers down, i think we're going to be extra cautious. Masks are still mandatory and we can't go to country Vic yet, as the state govt don't want 4.5 million people heading for the beach immediately. I'm hoping that the idiots don't stuff it for the rest of us.
I happen to agree! Took me 7 years and several thousand dollars, a lot of paperwork and lots of effort to get citizenship - and it's totally worth it. I don't have to tell you that.
