I got into Stratocaster big time about 4 years ago. So the first colour I went to was that classic Sunburst... It was just the most beautiful thing for me. But now, like most people, I find myself drawn to other colours more like surf green and Sonic blue. So I got a sonic blue standard as well ;-)

Now I'm thinking of a way to make my Sunburst American special somehow look more fresh. Right now it's the classic white pickguard with two-tone sunburst. Obviously black pickguard is the quickest way to make it look badass.

There's the matt black pickguard with black covers and black knobs. Then there's the black pickguard with black covers and cream knobs.

Other than those intuitive choices, is there anything else out there that will look really cool with a Sunburst while not being too outrageous or modern? Maybe even if it's as simple as black pickguard and some other colour of pickup covers and knobs? Black pickguard and shell pink hardware?

Turquoise shell is a big no for me although I can see why people like it. I respect you guys the same way I respect a bald guy who has the courage to wear a traditional haircut and not shave his head or get plugs.

The vintage mint green, which is really more offwhite is always the best look if you don’t like tortoise. It looks great with the sonic blue. It would be my only choice. Black on sonic blue looks bad, I think.

Nice but I'm happy with the white on my Sonic blue for now. I'm looking only for the 2 tone burst.

Not a sunburst here but +1 on the mint green, might be too small a change from white though...

Black pickguard with white knobs on a 2 tone burst always looks nice though, a bit of an SRV vibe then?

I put a genuine Fender mint green on my 2TSB American Special, love the look.
I had tortoiseshell on my old American series 3TSB which was cool

The mint green looks best on the sunburst too.

I’m not a fan of black or mother of toilet seat on a sunburst finish.

...But, this is all completely subjective and whatever you like now it will probably change for you later....

I like pearloid, parchment, and white. I also dig the gold anodized, but only on a white guitar. I dislike tortoise most of all, black next, and mint as well.

I'd do white on the sonic blue, parchment on the sunburst.

I like white pearl and mint!! in my case I”m planning to change my black pickguard from my 3ts deluxe strat for a black pearl or even white pearl, but I”m not really sure of the result due to the black picks and knobs. Any opinion?
