What do ya think is the best color pickguard for a lake placid blue strat with rosewood fretboard then?

Old look pearl is well suited to certain lighter pearl/metallic colors, IMO:

Heh. Well then I can't help you, because I replace either of those whenever they're on a guitar I buy. Tastes are personal. Good luck and enjoy!

To me tortoise is the only good color for sunburst. Perhaps what you need is a candy guitar. That will give you variety then you can put purl or mint on it. I have a green strat that Im getting a sunburst guard for.

Looks awesome on yours. My Strat had a very wide black band around the edge -- so wide that the pickguard covered it at the waist on the bass side. The black guard and rosewood made the whole thing too dark.

Each burst has its own personality. I think that has to be taken into account when determining the proper pickguard.

Yeah, G&L's approach covers less of the upper bout. There's almost no red at all and what looks like black is actually a very dark brown. It's really more of what I'd call tobacco sunburst and somewhat unique to that guitar too.

The Tele goes from black to red on the upper bout with no amber showing outside of the pickguard at all. I tried a black pickguard on it when it still had a rosewood board but went back to the pearl when I installed the maple neck.

Top photo same guitar, mint/white, black on black.
Second better pic show's how the black brings out the roasted swamp ash grain.
I think the white line on the edge of the pickguard is important here.
