The parents that are watching games and saying "What is coach thinking? That's not going to work!!"

I think I am one of those but about marching band directors. :D Will never express any of it other than here where my kid does not visit and I assume, none of the marching band kids/parents/directors. It is my hope that this years show is better than it seems to me as a former kid/boy marching trumpet playing person.

I will find out in a few hours. Fingers crossed.

On the good side, I can't really see myself chasing band directors around hurling abuse. I think they mostly work their butts off for the kids the school and themselves.

When I was I kid I had a soccer coach that was terrible, yelled at the kids , didn't know his a$$ from his elbow, I don't remember complaining about it but the word was out on this coach and they were getting rid of him and it looked like our team was a gonner too, but my Dad stepped in and took over as coach , I don't really think he knew much about soccer but he was determined that us kids would get a chance to play and have some fun. Not sure we won many games but every kid got a chance to play and we did have fun. I always admired him for jumping in like that

That's a great story and what your Dad tried to do seems like the right thing to do. Unfortunately, as I mention to Simoncroft all the time, the USA has at thing for making EVERYTHING a competition. Big stakes in prestige and community pride and frankly, in salaries for band directors/coaches/teachers. I am not convinced that we are doing the right thing but it is what it is.

....and I assume old footballers, of whichever kind of football, get excited when it's game day. I am super excited, ready to see the younglings strut their stuff.

Easily in the finals, if they kill it, they could win. Best drumline would be nice also...

That's awesome to see that many kids out there. When I was in high school and in marching band, we had 60 musicians and 30 color guard. It was fun. Now the same high school has 12 musicians and 10 color guard in the marching band....so sad.

yep, even marching band is a big deal in Texas.

The kids came in 3rd of 11 bands in their division. The 2 that beat them are perennial powerhouse programs so that 3rd is just a ticket below the level of the big programs. I think they will do well this year and I was completely wrong about the show, it was really good when polished up and put together.

ummm they are big kachina doll things. :D The shows are thematic and out show this year is all Russian composers, color guard is in Russian style outfits, and those dolls, which are famous for their ability to proliferate:

do proliferate until they are filling the field. This year, our show is really very very good visually compared to most of the other bands.

I used to do Drum and Bugle Corps back in the day. Parents were rabid.

Drum Corps was (and still is) super competetive.

Some ofcthe most memorable years of my young life! :)

My son aims to do a season of Drum Corp International. Probably between graduating HS and starting college.
