Man, don't ask this question at tdpri. There the list would read: Django, Robert Johnson, Charlie Christian, etc...

    No real order...

    D Gilmour
    J Winter
    R Trower
    J Page
    T Iommi
    A Lifeson
    K Richards
    R Rhoads
    Z Wylde
    C Santana
    G Tipton

Even some relatively mediocre guys that always played their balls off.
It's nuts how many great players there are.

I never got to see Blackmore or Frank Marino live. I'm an idiot.

I can only think of three that really knocked me out:

    Robben Ford
    Drew Zingg
    Jon Herington

And then a bunch of other guys who weren't as a good.

I've been to very few concerts, and the only ones with guitarists of note were:

    Yngwie Malmsteen
    Joe Satriani (twice)
Metallica (Kirk Hammett + James Hetfield)
    Ratt (Warren DeMartini)

These were all great shows, but my absolute favorite concerts were classical performances that included virtuoso violinists Gil Shaham (solo + accompanied by piano) and Sarah Chang (Mendelssohn concerto).

    Yeah, Hendrix died a half-century ago, so.....yeah.

Scotty Moore was still performing well into the 2000s

Jimmy Page still emerges once in a while.

    Garcia
Danny Gatton (many times in small bars)
    Warren Haynes
    Duane Allman
    Buddy Guy
    Stevie Ray Vaughan (small bar)
    BB King
    John Mayer
    Neil Young
    Jimmy Page

Close to the order above, but, really, when talking about players this great, how do you pick one over another. But Garcia will always be my number one.

Sure wish I had seen Gilmour, he would be near the top of my list.

I've seen quite a few of the greats in large halls and arenas, but if I had to list the top 10 most fun for me, it would include shows like Robin Trower, Muddy Waters, Gatemouth Brown, Bobby Parker, and Blue Oyster Cult, all seen at modest sized clubs in DC. Then there was a guy whose name I can't remember in a small club in DC who played really good blues guitar with it in his lap like a lap steel, and only touching it with his two thumbs.

I tell you what, I've seen a few concerts through the years with plenty of shredders, but man...Zakk Wylde's live guitar tone was by far the best. Loud, clear, punchy...I don't know what his using nowadays (his own Wylde Audio amps, Marshalls or some sort of Kemper/AxeFX unit??), but it was glorious.

Man, I'm so jealous of these lists! I haven't had the chance to see most of my favourite players live, but of the ones I've seen, I'd say the best were (in no particular order):

    - Angus Young
    - Slash
    - Clapton
    - Jonny Lang
    - Jack White
    - James Hetfield/Kirk Hammett
    - Robert Cray (he opened for Clapton and put on the better of the two shows that night)
    - some guy who opened for Colin James. Can't remember his name now, but he played some fantastic acoustic slide blues.
    - Tom Morello
