It is always a bit confusing knowing what people mean when they refer to the 2nd and 4th positions on a Strat. To me, the 2nd position is the neck and middle pickups together ..What say you?

I'm with you, but for some people that's the fourth position. And to be honest, AFAIK, that's in accordance with the "official" Fender specs (2nd position = bridge + middle).

ya 1= bridge , 2= bridge + mid , 3 = mid,4=mid + neck, 5= neck.

seems backwards to me also .
Same as the strings with the 6th being on top and not called the 1st.
the 1st is on the bottom and called the top.

For me, 1 = neck because that's my favourite position and the one I use the most. :D

same here and for about 20 years I thought thats the way they where outlined. No wonder people screwed up there faces when I talked about the tones I got outta Pos.1

"what do ya mean pos 1 is nice and thick, deep and woody: not thin and harsh"

You know I asked my Instructor about this. He told me it has to do with the sheet music staff.
The lower notes are on the bottom and the higher notes on top.
So guitar tab reflects this too.

Sheet music whats that. They still write music down these days. LOL all joking aside sounds reasonable , good idea to have a standard way of doing things. More so for tab I guess, I did read music years and years ago.

That's funny I never thought about that. I always assumed tab was the way it was because that's how you see the fretboard when playing, i.e. from above, if that makes sense...well, anyway, your explanation makes more sense!

They also label the 1-5 positions (starting with the bridge) in the service manuals that you can download from the Fender/Squier sites.
