I spent a lot of time auditioning drum grooves with the intent of being able to make some really rough sketches of a couple of tunes for the guys in the band. Finally got tired of jerking around and put ONE CONDENSER mic in front of the kit, maybe 4 feet in front of the kick drum and the mic was tilted downward just a bit and around 4 feet tall. I'm not a particularly good drummer but I banged out some groove and the funniest part is that sonically, it's not terrible.

I have learned this many times, but not lately. :D

I know you were exploring the rabbit hole of EZ and other software. I'm glad you banged out some acoustic drums and got some useful tracks. Honestly, if I lived in a house and not an apartment, it would be fun to get a kit again. But for the way I'm recording now, programs are the quickest and easiest option.

Hope you and your new collaborators record some stuff. I always really enjoy your songs.

Give me a sec, going to post a sample. It's not meant for public consumption, more like seeing if the vibe and concept work. This was done one condenser in front of the drumkit, and then I decided to record same mic several feet from the amp. Was surprised, they have an interesting sound.

Try this:

Yep, totally works. That's a very useful sound for a simple mic setup.
